Default The Bridge

An old, decommissioned lift bridge, in Welland, Ontario.

The biggest issue was trying to meter the scene. Even with the sun behind the clouds, the bridge was strongly backlit, and it was tough to get a good meter reading. I feel that, as a result, the bridge itself ended up too dark, and I had to dodge it quite a bit to get any detail (even still, some detail in the deepest shadow areas was impossible to get back).

What should I do to improve this image?

EXIF:
Nikon D300
24mm lens (36mm effective focal length)
1/8000 sec
Aperture f/2.8
ISO 200

I really want to see more of the bridge, could you have held the camera in a portrait format to get more in. I don't think that the pylons being a bit dark is a problem because it's a very graphic type image (if that makes sense), the contrast between the hard, angular metal & the organic, natural clouds is the 'story' of this pic?
Your exif's very odd, you've got a wide aperture & a blisteringly fast shutter speed but the scene looks focused?

I got away with that aperture because it's a reasonably wide lens, and the main subject (the near pylon) was fairly far away. Odds are, everything from the near pylon to infinity would be rendered in reasonably sharp focus.

I will absolutely try to get the whole bridge next time I'm there. Thanks!
