This was my first attempt at B&W just decomposing RBG and adjusting channels (along with sharpen mask and curves). His left cheek (camera right) looks blown in the BW but I didnt think I had blown any spots in the original. Feel free to point me in the right direction on how I can improve this B&W. Thanks!

GIMP is a great tool for doing just that. Just keep adjusting those sliders until you get what you want. You did a nice job of separating him from the background. Definitely worthy of grandma's fridge.
PS You've got some nice classic cameras on your Flickr stream.

My goodness, he is PRECIOUS! You know, the cheek might be a tad bright, but it kinda draws in the eye and makes you want to pinch that lil cheek til it's ruby red.... then I find my eye drifting back upward towards his lil nose and those bright sparkly eyes.
Cuteness factor is a definite 10.
