Default first attempt at photoshoping

This is my first attempt at using photoshop for anything really. I'd like what ever criticism or advise anybody can give. please keep in mind that the original was of my niece taking a picture of herself with an ipod touch that i downloaded off of facebook lol

basically what I did was soften the skin with surface blue and tried to give her eyes the true color of our family's eyes. they seem to be a trait we all have

from what i can see, you did the eyes alright, but the skin is a touch overdone. I can sympathise completely with overdoing the photoshop as its a huge problem that i've got too. I'll relay some advice i was recently given to help you out with this.

When your photoshopping, never work on the original image. Import your image and then make a copy of the layer. do your edits on the second layer, then when your done, and if you think you might have over done it a bit, reduce the opacity of the second layer to bring the detail of the first layer back.

the girls skin needs some of this advice. you've smoothed her skin out just a touch too much, she looks a bit like plastic now. if you did your work on a second layer, try out the opacity trick to bring some original detail back, or if you didnt use a layer, just bring in as a layer the original file and put it underneath that one.

yeah I could definitely tell what you were saying so I went back and lowered the opacity of the lowpass layer and then I tried to correct some of the exposure of the backgound and got rid of the sonoco sign in the background. any feedback is greatly appreciated!
