Default First time use of FLARE

So I was messing around with PS (I have the worlds oldest version but it still does some cool stuff.) and ended up with this photo. I know a lot of people are not big on adding lens flare but I just liked the way it turned out.
What do you think? Too gimmicky? Any other critiques OK (unless it's just "I don't like rats!" LOL

I just noticed his back end looks over processed....too much sharpening?

50mm prime lens(still learning to use this)
Long story short. I was doing GREAT with my D50 but had outgrown it and was saving for either a D90 or D7000. Well, out of my own stupidity I LOST the D50 and needed a camera right away. i found a good deal on the D90 with a lot of cool extras (the 50mm lens for one) Anyway....I feel like I'm starting all over again.

Perhaps a tad overdone. I'd probably get rid of the blues and greens in his tail end but other than that, its a cool photo!!!

Default +1

and for a little added touch, paint in just a tiny bit of red to the reflections in the eyes. That will help put the red from the flare more into the shot instead of just an overlay feel.

I'm typically one of those that doesn't love fake flare, but this is ok.
I'd consider tone it down a bit as it feels too sharp and (to me) too obviously fake. Maybe blur the layer you created it on a bit to make it softer..?

EDIT: Oh, and where it's coming from doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Would putting it up in the corner work better?

Sorry the lens flare is a massive no from me... I really dont like it. It looks false and clearly doesn't belong there.

i can see why you've added it as it brings interest to the background on that side, but i'm just not keen.

I really like the rest of the image though, its really interesting and different
