I think they are fine tbh. They dont distract from the picture or look ridiculous so I dont personally think there's anything wrong with them.

They also kind of add texture to the walls so thats a good thing in my mind

I think they are fine too. I really like how you processed this. Must be hard to get the pug to sit still for your bracket? Cute dog btw

They're fine. The only thing I would do is tone down the bright areas left of the table leg, and probably some selective sharpening of the dogs face.

Very nice pic!

Halos scream "mistake" to some people and they won't forgive you breaking a rule. (what do they say about rules?)
I don't mind them so much in this image around the chair.

I do think the bright hot spot behind the table is a bit distracting form the subject, as is the bright left front chair leg.

I like the structure this effect has given to the image.

First of all, I really like this...it's a good study and your dog's expression just completes it. It's obvious that you and your dog share an understanding. It's definitely a keeper and maybe even more to Pug people. The light(halo?) that you have to the left of the picture(under the table-top and situated in the upper chair rung) appears to me to compete a little too much w/your dog's face and body. If you can tone that down a hair, it'd be really nice. That to me is the biggest issue. Did you try any more crop on the bottom of the photo? Just enough of a crop to cut out that space under that last wooden support bar at the bottom of the table? Might look good, or might not...you'd have to try it and see. Can you also shed any speck of more light(still looking natural) on your dog's black muzzle? I, also have a black muzzled dog and light on his muzzle is always a booger.
Again, I really like this and it is apparent how much thought you put into this work and to me it's a moving piece. I'm generally highly critical of animal photographs because I have 13(horses, dogs, and cats) who are my subjects all of the time, so I know that animals are hard work, but this image...there's something special about it, it's really nice. If you can do this consistently, you've got something!

Just rethinking that "suggested crop" comment of mine regarding your Pug piece. I think you are good on the bottom...perhaps cropping 1/3 of the empty space on the right of the photo would be better. The colors and textures are great and I love how natural his paw is resting in the chair and how his tag is laying to show full "bone" shape...great catch!

I adore this shot, my favorite part being the fact that SALLY is clearly visible on the tag (:
I would like to ask, is the "halo" effect something that happens while taking the photo, or is it post processing? Even if they are mostly known to be a bad thing, I would really appreciate knowing.
I know you are looking for critique, not questions, but I would really like to experiment with it some.
Anyways, I think the photo is great, and the halo is fine. It adds a nice amount of depth and texture to the photo (:

As a pug mum of many years standing I love your picture of Sally - she jumped of the chair straight after this, yes?
Having said that, here's my 2 cents on the shot - I find that there is a bit much other stuff in the photo besides the dog, she is quite central and I would be inclined to crop so that she is not so centered in the frame and she takes up more of it.
I don't generally like the more overprocessed look but I think it works well here and so too do the halos, the add texture to the shot. The colours and lighting look good too.
Cheers
