Here is another attempt at HDR. I went for a more realistic and subtle approach. How did I do as far as an over all photo?

While it is great to experiment with hdr, it just doesn't work on every scene. In this scene, I just don't see how hdr is helping. By reducing the contrast, it has made the overall image seem dull and flat. The exposure difference among your 3 exposures is quite small so you have missed out on collecting the rich darks or the bright whites. A more conventional exposure for 3 exposure hdr would be -2, 0, +2.
Oh, and the horizon needs to be straightened. |

Hi! I agree with the last comment, but I wish to encourage you to keep at it!
Not every scene is suitable for HDR. What you want in your scene is a very wide range from deep black all the way to almost blown out highs, with plenty to spare in the middle. This same scene with both large billowing white clouds yet some sky might work out better, but in truth I don't think the building itself is suitable for HDR. If you want to practice and get used to HDR, I suggest shooting skies with lots of big clouds yet plenty of blue showing. Another thing you could try is a normally lit room while it is very bright outside through a window. Target the inside of the room for exposure first, experiment, and then shift the exposure target as being outside, and experiment. |
