Default first photo with new camera

I recently got a new D5000 and right when I got it I was playing around and took this shot. I played around on Gimp and HDRtist on my mac and came up with this. This was maybe the 3rd picture I have ever taken with the new camera, but for some reason I like it a lot! What could I have done to make it more "real" I used the HDR app and I thought it added more depth. Thanks for looking

To make it more real....

Dont use HDR applications when are not shooting the correct methods for HDR
Dont use a high pass filter look (may be from the HDR application though)
And finally dont edit the eyeball to be turquoise.

If you want it be look heavily processed, then ok. I dont like selective color and in this situation, it really makes the eyeball scream at you.

"What could I have done to make it more "real"?"

You're kidding us, of course!

I agree with above post. Don't mess around so much. Learn to take images with your new camera.
