A couple things I noticed is the bright white spot over his head. Remove that.
I like these kind of photos, reminds me of a kid when we did the silhouette thing in school. They do work best when there is more defined. Such as on this one their faces are blending together

You can accomplish the same thing in Photoshop using the Threshhold feature and you'll have a lot more control over it that way. If you did that with the B&W image beneath along with layer masks and blending modes, you could have nearly infinite control over what appeared and what didn't. You are likley to find that some images lend themselves very well to this treatment, others not so much. It reminds me a great deal of the litho film we used to use back when I worked at the university print shop. The film was developed for use with type where you don't want any gray areas, but there were times when it could be used with a photograph to create something special.
