Well I'm pretty new to photography, I've only really had mobile phone cameras in the past and never really took photography seriously until i decided to buy a DSLR in january this year, and have been photographing since then. Just thought I'd share one of my favourite shots, this one I took in New York in April, so I'd been into photoraphy for 4 months at the time. just wanted some feedback, maybe some tips for improvement? |

unfortunately i'd just spent over $1000 on a few lenses, so yes i was shooting freehand. I leant against a lampost to steady myself, some of the other shots i took here were a lot worse! but a tripod is definately on my list of things ot buy. also i've experimented with using the timer feature on my camera instead of a remote trigger, it seems to work just as good, but would you still recommend getting a trigger?

Not sure what you shoot with, but for my D90, my cable release was only 30 bucks. You can also get a wireless one for 15 bucks or so. (Though I don't recommend it, as your limited to where you can use it). Timer is nice, but ever since I got my cable, I use it quite often.

i have an olympus E520, and i just had a quick look online, looks like theres various 3rd party ones for £3, and a couple more "dependable" looking ones varying between £15-30.
might be a worthy investment =] |

A tripod is indeed very recommended when shooting low-light or at night. When not having a tripod available, you can also place the camera on a steady flat surface and use timer or trigger to shoot. Sometimes it can be not as good viewpoint as you'd like to, but better that than camera shake.
