Default Awkward Vignette?

I was riding my bike this afternoon, saw the setup and had to grab a picture of it. Nothing fancy, but am looking for any pointers about any aspect of the picture.

Thumbs up

I actually really like this photo. The variety of colors, good saturation, leading lines taking you through the picture. The vignetting is nice too, not TOO over done, but its at the limit I believe. Nice capture!

I like it! I might clone out the green street sign ...it is smack in the middle and the color is calling out "look at me!"

True, there already was a screaming red fire hydrant next to the street sign that i took out with gimp; i forgot about the less obvious sign. Thanks for the comments.

Nice shot - it's a pity the car wasn't parked just a little closer to the kerb - I would have liked to have seen a little more car, but wouldn't want to change the composition of the rest of the shot.

Nice work getting rid of the hydrant - I couldn't tell at this size. I agree that you should work the same disappearing magic on the street sign.

I love it. I think the composition is nice, though I agree that it would've been nice to have the car a *tad* closer to the curb so you could have the same composition yet still have more of the car in on the left side.

I'm not usually a fan, but I think the vignette is subtle and works great for this image.

What's the subject of the photo? To me, the vignette is awkward, because as I see it the subject of the photo is the car, but your putting most of that into shadow with the vignette. It also forces your eye back to the center of the frame, where you do have some nice leading lines, which force you deeper into the frame, but there's really nothing to stop and fixate on except the car which you're de-emphasizing with the vignette.

Thanks for the great advice. I liked the vintage look of the car and thought it would be a good shot to experiment with the vignette effect which I just learned the night before. I sat there in front of the car moving from side to side, but it seemed that every other shot had too many distracting elements in the background. I'm still very new to composition (and every other element of photography) and am really guided by "Oh that looks cool".

To be fair to the fire hydrant, I did get a close up of it.

The original car shot is attached.

Compositionally, I think it works, I'm just not keen on the vignette. If anything, I would say you might want to use a neutral gradient filter applied left to right (instead of top to bottom) to further push the viewers eyes toward the car. I would also recommend leaving the sign. It provides a nice anchor in the background to give your eyes something to rest on before following the horizontal green line of the sign back to the car. Without that anchor, I think you'd end up getting lost in the tangle of trees back there.
