I am shooting JPEG with a Canon T1i at the largest and fine setting. When I open the photos in Photoshop the size is 3000 X 2000 pixels but only at 72 dpi. I can change the dpi to 300 but it shrinks the size of the image. What do I need to do to get a 300 dpi image straight out of the camera. Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The "DPI" setting is basically meaningless. All it is is a number stored in the file -- it doesn't affect the size (in pixels) of the image at all. Is there a reason that you want to set the DPI?
If you print through an online service, they don't even pay attention to the DPI setting. You choose the image size, and they squeeze your pixels into that print size -- regardless of the DPI setting.

You can set the DPI resolution as well as the pixel resolution in most RAW converters. This is only of use if you ever need to submit something to a print house, as mentionned, because they'll likely be printing at 300dpi.

I don't think DPI "affects" anything. I've always understood DPI to be a "printer setting" and PPI and image size setting. I *think* DPI might matter if you have a printer which will read the file and automatically print it according to it's exif. Pro printers do not.

Yes, but photoshop uses PPI not DPI. I do believe there is a technical difference. But looking at the OP, PPI was probably what was really meant to start with.
