Default Importing RAW into Lightroom?

So I am having an issue with RAW images... I have done some searching on the internet but still have no success. I decided to start taking RAW Photographs and editing them... well I can't seem to get either Lightroom 2 or Photoshop CS3 to open my RAW files.

I own a Nikon D5000... I went to my menu... selected "Image Quality" and then "NEF (RAW)"

The went out and shot some pictures... took them off my SD Card onto my Laptop and then opened Lightroom 2.

IMPORT > Folder w/ Pics > Select RAW Image > ...

Then I get a message saying "the file seems to be unsupported or damaged"

and when I try to open in PS CS3 it says unsupported as well...

Any idea whats going on?

Have you installed the latest camera raw from adobe???

The d5000 is quite new so probably wont be supported in version 2.

Thank you! I got the update for LR and it works... Off to go get CS3 updated. Thanks again... didn't realize you'd need an update for a file format like RAW

The problem is all Nikon "NEFs" are not created equal. Even though they use the same extension each camera actually writes a different file sturcture, so you need the right converter for each.

Glad I could help

Kirb's spot on each camera's format is slightly different to make the most of the latest tech. At the moment there is no universal "raw" format, it wouldn't be an issue at all if the manufacturers ditched their proprietary extensions and all used (or converted internally) to an industry standard (say dng). But they don't so every time a new camera comes out users need to get the latest converter.
