Default Lightroom Workflow Questions

Ok, recently started using Lightroom. Love it but still struggling with establishing a workflow. I have some questions:

-When you import photos, it brings them in fine. I like to change the folder name to something else, otherwise, it just imports all photos from that day in the same folder. How do you create a new folder and move photos from one to another folder? Can't figure out how to do this.

-When I edit files, I do some things with them in RAW, then, sometimes, I edit the file in Photoshop. Ok, got it saving as a TIFF, no problems, however, it always seems to put the photos out of order then. Very confusing if you have more than a handful of photos. Is there any way to keep the pics together (RAW and TIFF)?

-When you remove a file vs. delete a file, what, exactly, happens to the file?

I think that's about it for now.

Thanks.

You can create a new folder by right clicking on any of the folders listed in the folders list on the left side of the program window (Click Create Folder Inside...). Then you can just drag your shots that you want to move to the new folder. I have mine set to import based on the day that I took them so that each day is in their own folder, but if you wanted to, say, make a folder for the zoo and the museum in a day's folder, that's what you would do. Create a new folder then drag the images there.

Mine winds up putting both the RAW and TIFF files at the end of the set of files, but they're always together. Not quite sure if there's any way to keep them in the right order. Though I think they wind up in the right order after I've quit out of LR and then opened it back up (I think... not 100% on that one)

Removing a file from LR leaves the file on your computer and you no longer see it in LR, but it does not delete the file. Deleting the file removes it from your computer (or at least puts it in the trash / recycle bin).

Default Lightroom Catalogues

Hi.

My query is similar. I am a new user of lightroom and now getting the hang of it. Over the past year I have imported all my pictures into one catalogue. Along the way I have keyworded, but not to the detail that will help in my query.

Basically I want to be able to split my catalogue into three, maybe four, catalogues. Club photo's (I am in a camera club), family photo's, general photos (not family, not good enough for the club), and maybe a specific interest catalogue.

Can I grab a folder that may be say general photos and put into a new catalogue. However some folders are a mix of all the above, can I colour, or star, label all my say family photo's from various folders and move them this way.

As you can gather any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Russ

Thanks so much for the answers to my questions! I want to start organizing properly NOW rather than LATER when I've got too many photos to manage.

I don't quit out of LR very often so I'll have to check on that and whether it puts the photos back in order.

Thanks again!

you can grab and move files and folders. Rating with stars or colors will not move them, only filter them...so you could leave them where there are and color code them...then when you want particular types of images, filter on the desired color.
