Default Regarding RAW editing (Panasonic LX3)

Hello,

This is my first post - I'll keep it short!

I've been using my trusty LX3 for a few months now - and have recently begun capturing RAW images (RAW + JPEG). I've begun editing using UFRaw (running within GIMP) and can see that the RAW image provides more clarity (especially viewed at 100% zoom).

Basically - I've read about the different colour and camera profiles you can use for each individual camera - but can't seem to find any such files for the LX3.

Do they exist? Or are they limited to dSLR's only?

I suppose it's no big deal - but it just sounds as if loading these specific camera presets makes editing that little bit faster.

Thanks,

Dan

You can also use raw therapee another raw editor to do your work then hit send to gimp and do the finishing touches as the gimp cant handle 16bit yet.

As for colour profiles there more for colour managed workflows you have a profile for your monitor and a colour space your work in the colour space profile is attached to the file when taking the picture and typicaly depicts how the colours will show on a device. Theres a debate over SRGB and ADOBE RGB and which is best. In fact theres another thread asking about it.

As for camera profiles I cant help you there.

EDIT ********************************************

Sorry this is getting long lol... The RAW files wont be effected by a colour profile they will only have one assigned when converting to JPEG, how ever the JPEG will have one assigned. If your pictures will be displayed on the Web, Monitor or Printed at a local Lab then stick with SRGB. If you are sending them to a commercial printer they will accept Adobe RGB but unless you have a colour managed workflow its probably best to stay with SRGB.

Bear in mind though if you plan to show the JPEG to clients as proofs and edit the RAW you will find it very hard to match them up perfectly so it may be best to batch convert your RAWs to JPEG for proofs then they will both look the same.

Thanks for your reply- that was alot of help!

And yes - I tried to match one of my Raws to the matching JPEG but found it quite difficult! I'll keep reading about it all though.

I believe you're talking about the camera matching profiles as discussed in the link below. I have found Adobe's profiles work very good as a preset to make the initial look of your RAW file almost identical to the camera's JPEG. Keep in mind that this is a preset and non-destructive to the RAW file. These only work with Camera Raw and Lightroom. Apple's Aperture also has built in pre-sets, but they are not as good, IMO. I don't know if there are any available for GIMP.
