I am in love with surreal photos and really want to learn more about it: tips and techniques, best software to use? I can be pretty artistic, love to paint and draw, but have never really applied it digitally. Since I am also a photographer, I would love to merge these talents and create some beautiful work. Does anyone know of any good tutorials or their best tips and tricks in turning a photo into a digital work of art? I have seen some really great examples on imagekind.com... Surrealism prints and posters at Imagekind. Truly inspirational. I wanna do this!!!

Well if you have photoshop here's a link to tutorial site I have saw a few things on there could apply to what you have outlined. You may have to scrawl through the site but I think It will have a few things you may be able to apply to the area your looking at.
Oh the link points to the page with "surreal" already in the search terms so if you want to see the whole un filtetered site you would have to reload it ![]() Surreal | Psdtuts+

To really get great doing surreal artwork like this you will need to be an expert with photoshop and possibly illustrator depending on what you want to do.
Much of these works are created using an online stock image gallery, these images are then combined inside photoshop, various effects and blending modes are used depending on what you want to accomplish. I don't really think there is a tutorial out there that will tell you how to do this and do it well. Creating images like this require the use of the majority of photoshop tools. Some things you may want to study up on. 1. Creating selections in photoshop 2. Balancing color between two images 3. Layer Masks 4. Adjustment layers 5. Healing and Cloning last but not least a vision. Creating a rough design on paper with a pencil will really help you select the stock images that will work for your piece. The more work you put into find a source image that is perfect for your needs the less time you will need to spend post processing everything together. Some of these artists spend more time finding the images then they do creating the work.
