Default Shooting in RAW....

So I've been shooting in RAW and am pleased with the results when I view the photos with the software that came with my camera. I can't look at the pictures when I try to open the file outside of my camera's software, though. How do I convert a RAW file to be viewed like a JPEG and printed? P.s. I hope this is the right section for this question....

Open your raw file in the supplied software. Edit as you see necessary. Then, to see it as a jpeg, save it as a jpeg.

I clicked on the 'save as' drop down tab, but it only gives me the option the save it as CR2 again. How do I save it as a JPEG?

Can you lower the bit depth to 8bit?

I am not at all familiar with the canon software as i don't shoot canon. Maybe google searching could help.
