View NX can convert the RAW to JPEG.

The latest release of Picasa also has RAW support, albeit basic support.

Had the same problem yesterday.

I imported the pics using the camera software (nikon d60) and after that i had to update the CAMERA RAW plug-in for Photoshop.

If you look on the Adobe site they have a list with the version of camera raw plug in you need for your camera. Download/update the plug-in (they tell you how to do it as well) and after that you can open them in Photoshop as NEF and save them as psd or whatever you want. It takes a while, but it works.

Hope that helps.

Most Nikons has build-in RAW to JPEG converter (just go to Retouch, pick an item such as color balance and save without any adjustment).

In your case (D5000), you can use Retouch NEF (RAW) processing.

You wouldn't have happened to remember the link to the download of the file? Or what exactly you used for the search syntax?

I'm not sure if this will support the D5000, but Nikon View is free, and can be downloaded here: Current Versions of Nikon Software

One thing to keep in mind is that not all versions of Adobe Camera Raw, work with all versions of Photoshop. I have CS2 and when I tried to upgrade camera raw to support my D300, I got an error that the newest version of camera raw wasn't compatible with the older version of Photoshop. Everything works fine in LightRoom, but I can't open raw files directly into PS without paying for an upgrade.

Adobe Camera Raw Updates:

Windows
Mac

Each version tells you which cameras were added for that version. For the D60 you need at least 4.4.1

Hopefully you have solved your RAW conversion problem by now. What I had to do though, was download a CODEC. I think that is like an update, for my computer. I do not have the download, but cnet may have it. I now use PS3 to open my RAW files, and I convert them from there.
