Red face Help with RAW

Hey folks hope you can help because i'm getting sooooooooo frustrated........went out today and shot loads of "experimental" pics and did them all in RAW mode onto my memory card...came home and my pc can't open them - managed to open them with the software i got with the cam (silkypix) (which doesn't seem to allow you to save them as any other format) but how can i open them in photoshop elements 7 or jpegs??

If this is in the "wrong" place sorry I'm new!!

Mandsg,

I purchased Elements 7 a couple of months ago and had the same problem. I went to the Adobe site and found a solution and can now view and edit RAW files from my Nikon D90. You have to use Adobe Camera Raw version 5.4. It is not a simple download as you have to go in an make some slight manual adjustments. If you follow the instructions in the Adobe Tech notice it is fairly easy. I have included an Adobe link that I think will help you work through the installation of the plug-in

Hope this is some help (and peace of mind)

Unable to open camera raw file in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements

Sorry Mandsg but I am not familiar with silkypix so I can't be much help. It may be that silkypx converter and Adobe RAW are not compatible and it is "confusing" PSE. Just a guess on my part.

I dont really know a lot about raw as each file type is different depending on the camera... but have you tried "raw therapee" its a free raw processor that opens a lot of raw file types and you can do some editing in there too with exposure, sharpness etc etc...

Ive mentioned this program twice already in these forums haha I promise im not plugging it Its just because I have been looking into RAW my self. Worth a try to see if it opens your files and you can process them and open them in what ever editor you like

Check the discs that game with the camera to see if there are any raw editors included.

Mandsg,

Try installing Picasa. I can open my RAW files in Picasa and can then save them as JPEG files. Files can also be edited in Picasa

Picasa should be able to view and edit, save raw files but it isn't much in the way of an editor.

To use the files in photoshop, you can do 2 things:
1.) The older versions of photoshop don't support new cameras. Buy the latest version of photoshop to get the latest version of Camera Raw. You cannot install the new version of Camera Raw in older versions of the software
2.) Download the Adobe DNG converter free from the adobe website. Convert your camera specific raw files to Adobe's open DNG format and open them in almost any photo editing program, including older versions of photoshop.
