Unhappy Question about clients printing large prints

Hi everyone

I know someone will be able to answer this for me

I am working in PSE 7 I think that would be good to know. My clients are printing photos larger than 8x10 and once they get into the 11x14 prints...the photos are looking grainy and out of color. Why is that happening?

Does that have to do with me editing or the place that is printing it? When I look at my screen or put it to 100% it doesnt look that way.

HELP.....I feel bad

Also if you could tell us what resolution you are set to, that would be helpful. If you upload to Flickr we can go and see for ourselves.

Two things to consider Christine, if you haven't already:
1) Your monitor is not calibrated and does not match with what your lab's profile is producing
2) Whenever I crop to 11x14, I always make sure they are 360 ppi before I upload to the lab. I do this by raising the ppi in Image Size in incremental steps of about 15 - 20 % increases at a time until I get to 360.

Christine, in Photoshop look for "Image Size"...Sorry, but I'm not sure where it is in PSE7, but it should be there. Also, make sure you have your camera setup for the largest/fine setting for your JPEGs...I'll assume you are not shooting RAW.

Go to the Image pulldown, go to resize-image size
That will tell you what the image size currently is in both pixels and inches and what dpi it is set to.

If the dpi is set to low (some are set to around 72dpi) then when its blown up it will look bad
I usually set mine to 300 (some do 360) as most of the online printers I use specify that..
I know the epson printers like the 360dpi better..

Understand that dpi is only relative to printing it matters not on image size...that is determined by the number of pixels in the image

Does dpi set on the image really have anything to do with anything -- I thougth not. If the image is 3300 pixels by 4200 pixels and you tell them to print it at 11 x 14 then it will be 300 PPI. If you tell them to print it at 22" x 28" then it will be 150 ppi. Its the pixel count and the size that determines how many pixels per inch there are. That is why you would not print something that is 330 pixles by 420 pixels as 11 x 14 as it would only be 30 ppi.
