Default Color calibrating your PC monitor

I need to know how to calibrate my monitor. What I see on the screen and what comes out of the printer are off. AUGH! For example, skin tones that look natural on the screen come out of print more RED than I want. Some of my friends call me a color Nazi for being too picky. That's ok. I maybe only a budding photographer, but I should be able to provide color accuarate proofs (to my print lab and clients) that are close representations of the final product.

I know monitors can vary from model to model. Various types of printer paper respond differently too. I use a PC and am working with a HP Pavillion f1703. I am also considering buying another monitor to work side by side with my exisiting monitor. Should I give up this monitor (model or brand) or is it acceptable enough to purchase a twin to give myself a larger workspace?

thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge. Michelle K

If your monitor is really old then replacing it may be a good idea.

I have some spare monitors lying around that are several years old and whenever I need to use them the first thing I notice is that the colours are way out.
