Default computer settings

im looking on my computer at the photos i have taken and they look fine to me..i print them and then they look dark..

how do you set the settings on the computer to be same as what you print??

You can get a monitor calibration device. I honestly can't tell you which ones are good, because I don't think any work with my operating system, so I haven't looked at them. You should be able to find some reviews of them with a quick search though.

You can also set your photo editing software to give a proof of the picture, which will supposedly show on your monitor what the print will look like. For this to work properly though, I believe both your monitor and printer have to be calibrated and have to be working off the same color profile. If you're serious about managing color, I would suggest finding a good book on the issue and taking a long time to learn about it.

For me personally, since I only produce prints for myself, I just deal with the slight discrepancies between monitor and printer. If it comes out too dark/contrasty I brighten it up a bit and reduce the contrast from what I would normally do for a picture displayed on the monitor. The expense (in time and money) of complete, correct color management just seems to be too much for what I want to produce right now.
