Default What is your workflow (LR2) to backup photos?

I am already messing up my files, folders, catalogs.....starting from importing photos from your device, I flag photos, which one to delete, keep, or edit.
Then I have many files ordered by date, some by subject. Everything is still stored on my hard disk. Today or tomorrow I need to get an external hard drive. Is it wise to import photos and backup to this (new) hard drive, because there is this backup feature. But then you have all photos (not selected yet).
How does everyone do this?
I want to clean up, organize before it is too late. I love LR2 although I could use some help. I have this book from Scott Kelby.

There are two sets of data that you need to have backup copies of:

firstly: the raw image files (or jpeg/tiff originals) - this is easy to do at import stage to a second hard disk. Yes it does slow the import down but it is less hassle & if you make it part of your workflow it gets done!

secondly: the actual LR database/catalog that stores the 'edit' setting should be be backed up.

there should be no need to backup exported files as they can be recreated from the other 2 data sources.

Ah there is a third set of data that does need to be backed up - that is the tiff files that are generated when you transfer images to be edited in photoshop or the likes of PTLens. This requires some discipline as it is not so easy to automate. One of the issues is where to store these files when generated. Would value some thoughts on this.

The way I work is:
My pictures & LR catalog are stored on a Raid1 partition on my main pc hard drive.
Then all is regularly copied to another internal hard drive.
Then all is also copied to 2 external hard drives, with one of the hard drives always at another location.
Also regularly backup the everything to DL-DVD's, & send an older copy to the external location.
Most of the copies are done using scheduled batch files during the night. Because with each copy I overwrite the data on the hard drives.
