Default Using Layers and Masks in Post Production

Being new to digital photography and especially post production, I am finding it very difficult to grasp what exactly is a "layer" and "Mask" I have looked all over the internet in the hopes of finding a simple explantion or definiton of what these techniques actually are and how does one use them. Is theree anyone out there who can, in simple laymans terms, explaine what these two thinga are and how one can use them. Any assistance would be greatlt appreciated. Tnamks in advance - Evan Davies
