Default About to give up on the GIMP

Hello all. I'm attempting to use GIMP 2.6.5 on a MacBook. The Mac has more than enough power to run GIMP, and I installed the required X11 driver. Some functions run properly, some functions don't run at all. I've posted before on this forum and others but the responses always referenced GIMP on a Windows computer. Example: Many replies mentioned using the right mouse button. Problem is that Macs don't have a right mouse button! I know that CTRL+Click on a Mac is a right button. However GIMP wants me to CRTL+Right Click. On a Mac that would be CTRL+CTRL+Click! See the problem.

Before I absolutely give up perhaps someone can recommend a book on GIMP, a book the addresses GIMP on a mac. I found a few, actually one, at the local B&N. It's only reference to a Mac was installation procedures. At least I couldn't see any specific Mac issues during a quick look-see.

I have extensive experience with Photoshop CSx on a PC. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get a PC for my PP work. Thank you for your inputs and for reading my mail.

ps: Only nine more days before retirement, life is good! Shooting a G10

Cs4 runs on Mac, no need to get a whole new system...

Actually, the CMD key is the equivalent of the CTRL key on the PC. So when you need a CTRL+Right Click on the PC, you would use CTRL+CMD+Click on the Mac with a one button mouse.

(The CMD key is the one with the cloverleaf or Apple symbol on it.)

Can you mention any specific function you're trying to do which isn't working? I've been using Gimp on my old PowerBook for years without running into these problems. I suspect that using Command may help you, but I'd like to see the specifics as well.

And why the hell would you buy a Windows box to run Windows if you already have a MacBook? What did you think Bootcamp was for? Although, if I just wanted to run the Gimp, I'd probably make my MacBook dual-boot OSX and Ubuntu. I'm too lazy, though, to reboot and switch OSes, so I'm just using Parallels to run Ubuntu for the Gimp (Gimp comes pre-loaded with Ubuntu). But I am weird.

With a MacBook, you're really not stuck with a single OS.

Gimp is fine on my Mac Mini. Mind you, I'm using a two button USB mouse rather than the official Mac version. That's probably cheaper than changing software!

And there's always the two-finger click for right-clicking.

Like wulf said, get a better mouse. Macs support multibutton mice.

I'm also using GIMP on a MacBook, but so far haven't had problems... as dcclark mentioned, we might be able to help with specific issues you've come across. I've found that once you figure out how to solve one or two issues in GIMP, it gives you insight on how to do several other things.

Default Amazing but true

Hello all,

Thank you to all that helped me with my problem. Turns out the issue was with my Mighty Mouse, wireless. Tried using a normal, three button, usb mouse. Now everything works as designed. GIMP now appears to operate differently, properly. Thanks again for all the help. I learned more during the followup of the various tips than I learned about my actual problem.

ps: 16 days until retirement!
