Default Can I see what I did?

When I use PS it tends to be a very hit and miss process as I barely even qualify as a learner at this stage. Every now and then I manage to actually improve an image then I get all excited and save it. Is there any way to re-open the photo and see what it was I did? Does PS have anything like a memory of what steps I took in the nightmare that is PP?
Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, I have CS3.

I'm not sure about photoshop but I know in Paint Shop Pro there is a place where you can view the history of what you have done. You can also save those steps into a script and re-use those same steps over and over.

Thanks.
Do you save the "history" before you save the photo?

photo shop does have a history, its up in the left hand corner where the files are like layers and filter and effects, and you can open it and look at it, I am not sure that you can save it, I will try and see if you can or not. and post the conclusion (;

I've never used the Photoshop history function but I believe you need to enable it first in your Preferences. From there it creates a text file listing all the steps you took on the image.
As far as reopening an image in Photoshop, the History pallet would not retain what information was present in previous edits and would start fresh with the current edit.

Thanks guys.
I guess I'll have to be a bit more conscientious about my processes and make note of what i do - at least until I know what i am doing.
Cheers.

IN CS3 or 4 or just CS when you work on an image you do keep your history but only so many steps.
SO if you are erasing something and click 20 times to erase thats twenty steps it saved. you can increase the history in your prefrences.
Once you save as a Jpeg you lose the ability to see all the steps. I'd make sure to look over them before saving if you really want to remember the steps....maybe keep a notebook by the computer to jot down the ones that really stand out and you'd like to use again.
