Question Nikon Raw - NEF

Is there any good freeware out there for working with Nikon's NEF raw files? I use GIMP for retouches and it won't read .NEF files. I want the benefits of RAW shooting, but can't figure out how to get it to go with my Nikon camera.

Thanks for any help you can give
Scott

UFRaw works as a stand alone and as a GIMP plug-in. Works fine for me!

Able RAWer seems to be popular, according to my google search.

Don't forget that your camera also would have come with software to work with the NEF files. If you don't have the disc you can download ViewNX from the Nikon site. Although that does add another piece of software to your workflow and I've heard good things about the RAW plugins for the Gimp.

I've tried a few free programs and prefer RawShooter Essentials 2006.

I was surprised to see that no one mentioned the ever free Picasa. It recognizes NEF and is easy to use. I use GIMP though for all of the actual post that I do.

So, color me dumb, but I have a question about what you said...

I don't use Picasa for any of my post. I simply use it to open the raw files, then do any post in GIMP. Is that bad?
