Default Using Gimp on Mac - need help

I'm trying to do the masking technique with Gimp 2.6 on my mac. I've checked out some youtube tutorials and follow step by step, but everytime I select the eraser - it erases to complete white instead of to the background layer? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advanced.

I use Photoshop, not the Gimp, but it sounds like you're painting directly on the layer, and not the mask. Did you select the mask before you started? (And you should not be using the eraser. You should be using a brush to paint black on the mask).

I use GIMP and the problem is that you don't have an alpha channel on the layer. Simply go to "Layer" in the top menu, select "Transparency" and "Add Alpha Channel". It will give you a transparent background when you erase.

Hope that helps!

ok i got it worked out, took advice from all over. First, I uploaded a background pick. Next I added another pick as a Layer. Then, I added a mask to that picture. I selected the mask, and then was able to use the eraser to erase to the background picture. Then I merged the whole deal and then flattened and this is what turned out.

Thanks for your help.
