Default Lemony Snicket - How Did They Do It?

One of my favorite styles of movies is Lemony Snicket. It has been done before, but this was the last movie I saw it done in so I figured it was a current example. I also happen to really like the movie, but the visual look of the movie really intrigues me and I'm wondering if anyone has any idea how easy it would be to achieve this effect in my own photos. There seem to be elements of HDR, cross-processing, even LucisArt in these pictures but I could be way off.

Here's a couple of shots from the movie:

Normally, I'm not a fan of HDRs, but if these are done using HDR, I'm intrigued. So, any ideas how one might go about creating this effect?

I actually looked for this when I first saw the topic and in my first attempt I was unsuccessful finding anything for you (yes, it does happen where I can't find a link lol!) So, I tried again... and this time... Success!

It's may not be perfect, but it does give some simple steps that someone used to transform a screen capture from the deleted scenes into something that had a similar quality to the movie. So, try this tutorial on the "Lemony Snicket" effect

Thanks Nicole! This should be pretty interesting. If anyone works through the tutorial, please share your work. I just got back from vacation and have 500+ photos to organize before I can "have fun", but I'm interested in what other people can do with this in the meantime.

I know I'm way late on this but is there anyway to get the lemony snicket tutorial back up and running?

It's not HDR: much of it is painted backdrops on a green screen, similar the the techniques used for The Aviator.
