Unhappy New to RAW. Need help transferring images!

Hi all! I'm brand new to RAW, and am already running into problems.

I set my camera for RAW + JPEG. I took 4 pictures, just to experiment.

So here's my problem....I transferred them onto my hard drive, and I got two copies of each...it looked like this:

IMG_0961.JPEG
IMG_0961(1).JPEG

BOTH are JPEG's....what's going on? Am I doing something wrong? The RAW's should have a ".CR2" extension.

When I first transferred the images, I used "Microsoft camera and scanner wizard"...however, it only transferred 4 photos...ONLY the JPEGS.

So I went to "My Computer" and selected my camera's icon, and opened the folder to see my images. I can see all 8 images (4 JPEG, 4 RAW).

When I view these files, I can see in the details that 4 are JPEG's; however, the other 4 (which should be .CR2) have NO format listed next to the image....

I selected all 8 and dragged them into a folder on my desktop. Once on my hard drive, they are ALL in .JPEG format.

Please help - what am I doing wrong?

What kind of software are you planning on using?

Install the Canon software that came with your camera. It will allow reading and viewing and downloading your images. You'll then see all of it.

Default Raw+JPEG + Windows XP + USB + Non-Canon software = a mess

The Canon USB-connection drivers for Windows XP aren't able to properly handle Raw+JPEG. You'll get exactly what you're seeing.

You have a variety of ways to deal with this:
  1. Use a card reader rather than USB.
  2. Use Canon download software.
  3. Use something other than Windows XP.
  4. Don't shoot Raw+JPEG.
The root of the problem: Windows XP was already discontinued by Microsoft before Canon came out with the CR2 Raw format, and Canon never re-wrote the old XP drivers to handle CR2+JPG. Windows XP is ancient.

I'd definitely do #1 & #2. . .or in lieu of #2, pick up Photoshop (either Elements or CS, depending on how rich you are) or Lightroom. . .or another photo editing program. If for nothing else, you'll probably want something a little more powerful than the Canon included software if you're even going to bother with RAW.

As for #1, card readers are definitely the way to go. They're not very expensive, and far more convenient than having to hook up your camera to the computer every time.

I connect my SD card to either mac and pc and don't have any issues or required to install anything special to run it on lightroom, but for photoshop it would need to be a dng conversion to work on photoshop. Not sure why you would get jpgs only, must be the sd card, or camera body, or card reader if you're using any... I only use a card reader to transfer my files and shoot both in high res jpg and RAW (jpg being the backup file just in case).

Hope it's ok to hop in here, as it relates to questions I have. I have a Canon 600D and shoot in RAW. I also use Win Xp, and a card reader to upload the images, using the Canon software zoombrowser, and then process using the Canon DPP.

I'm interested in your comment about the Canon software, and wonder what you would suggest? I have PS CS2
