Alright - I'm probably being slightly premature here, but I'm more of the immediate gratification type.
So I posted before about calibration issues - which I've been driving myself insane over since last night. I have a no-name monitor - I use whcc for printing and I pulled out one of the samples that I printed with them when I signed up and held it next to the monitor to try to adjust the settings manually and get it close (until my spyder3 gets here and I can calibrate it properly) It's kinda close - I think - but the contrast seems to be off (the shadows are fine, the highlights are too bright). Now - I've read things about 6500 Kalvin and gamma 2.2 - where do you find those settings? My monitor menu gives me brightness on a slider 1-100, as with contrast, and then for the color, it's tungsten, florescent, cloudy or user settings - I did the user settings and messed around with the R, G & B (which are also sliders 1-100) So....am I missing something? Is there a setting somewhere in my computer that I should be accessing? I use Windows 7 Honestly I feel so stupid - and just wish someone could come over and do this for me.

6500 kelvin is the color setting in temperature...
I think you find them under control panel/display, might be an "advanced" button or something. I don't remember as I haven't dug into a windows machine in a while. Never mind, Here you go

Thank-you for this! I tried it - I'm not sure how accurate the changes are, we shall see!
