Default How to improve a shot thru post process

Hi All,
I took this photo of stunning cloud formation, however, after reviewing I find that the picture is missing the "awe" effect. What tips or tricks are available out there. I am using Gimp as image processing software. The "awe" factors while observing the clouds include:
1- The size of formation
2- vivid colours
3- wonderful shape of formation

It was a relatively windy and chilled morning...how can I translate that into a photo?

I look forward to your feedbacks.
Thanks.
Jowel

Firstly, please don't take my criticism's to heart, I just want to be direct.

I don't think you can make anything out of this (I don't know what purpose you want it for, so maybe you could find some niche for it). It just looks like a chaotic mess. Maybe if there was some foreground? It's a dark and cloudy sky so it needs something more in it to give it that "imposing" look.

Wide angle shot with some foreground would grant it scale, right now it just looks like a tightly zoomed or cropped section of a bunch of very uninteresting clouds. Wait for a better opportunity and do a wide-angle shot

While I'll agree with Dreamglade that there isn't really a defined subject, per se, that's not to say that you couldn't get more drama out of this sky.

If you look at the original histogram, you'll see that everything is jammed up in the middle of the image. I added a boatload of contrast, pushed up the exposure and blacks to stretch the histogram out. Add some saturation to bring out the bit of blue/purple to the image and made it a more dramatic image.

There are lots of things you can do with this, it's got very nice texture to it and makes for a nice abstract. As Iaboomer says you can certainly increase the Drama - there are a few other ways to go besides increasing the "contrast"

I'd look into dodge and burning to really bring out the luminosity of the image - maybe even pull out a formation in the clouds your brain recognizes as a pattern. For example I can find a manta-ray or a flying bird - even a volcano amidst mountains spewing forth ash. Making certain tones darker and lighter can evoke a different sense from this image.

I think Boomer has it. The contrast is very low in the original. And to me it looks like it is lacking dynamic range. The histogram bears this out. What do you think of this edit?
