Wow super geek question I think they have a different forum for this but I hope someone will give you some advice because I am interested. Another thing to keep in mind is RAM and the RAM speed. PS eats ram ALOT OF IT. But the speed of the ram also makes a big difference. I had 6 gigs at 1600hz triple channel. I upgraded to 12 gigs at 1333hz duel triple channel and my Windows score for ram went from 7.9 to 7.5 and I don't know if I ever really noticed an advantage in performance with the 12 gigs even though I us it regularly. AMD is much cheaper but I really don't have any great advice either hopefully some more experienced users will chime in.

Win 7 Pro
ASUS P6T
Intel I7 930
2-GTS 250 1gig
12 Gigs 1333

Oh of course what software do you use? Photoshop CS4 I don't think will work any faster with a 64 bit system but CS5 will (so they say) it should also be able to utilize a quad core system better but I don't remember the details

Thanks Bwater, the unit I'm looking at has 8 gigs of ram and will be a big upgrade from what i use now. Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum, I did it from my phone.

Both come in a range of performances, so you need to be more specific. Or you could just go look at the benchmark. It seems to show the fastest Athlon II to be only slightly faster on Photoshop CS5 than the slowest i5 was: 183 vs. 189. So the answer looks like it's pretty much going to be: the i5 is faster.

At the more premium level, the fastest Phenom II (6 cores) was rated at 117, which is only slightly faster than the slowest i7 (4 cores) at 122. The fastest i7 (6 cores) was rated at 73.
