Default How To Achieve The Fogged Over/Faded Look..??

So recently I've been noticing that more pictures have a kind of faded or fogged look to the overall image that I love the look of. I'd love to try and incorporate this look into some of my pictures the only problem is that I have no idea what it's call or how to describe it other than to say a fogged over faded look.

I have a couple of examples to show you what I mean, but they are not my images so I am only going to post links to show the images from the Flickr sites of the photographers

Does anyone know what to call this kind of look or how to achieve it...??? Is it done at the point you take the picture by lighting or something else... etc or can it be done in photoshop later.... Any help you can provide would be great.

The first one looks like a "vintage" action or preset was used (google Florabella actions, Lilyblue actions, and also check out the vintage actions and presets on The CoffeeShop Blog).

The second one looks like just a bit of haze from backlighting.

the 'haze' is easily achievable in PS.. once your image is done, open an Exposure adjustment layer and push Offset slider (approx 0.0183, or to taste). I'm sure there are other ways, but none as easy as that one...

...assuming you're working in PS that is.

However as Susan pointed out, they're the result of a common or garden vintage action, some of which you can find at the link she provided.. not hard to find.

I forgot about the Offset slider....now I'm gonna have to go play with some old images. Thanks for the tip!

like susan said, the first one was given that look in PP.
the second one however is just a flare from shooting into the sun / light source.

Thanks for the help.. and I'm loving the blog you gave the link to, it has some great and useful stuff on. I especially love how she breaks down the actions into the individual steps.. Thanks.

I love the actions she has on her coffeeshop blog. Best part about them - they are free
