I was looking at going to a metallic print. My printer offers it at a 50 cent difference for 11x14. What is the big deal with metallic printing? Is there a tangible difference?

Honestly? I love the way many of my prints look on metallic. There is a tangible difference, and I'd agree that it does give almost a 3d quality. I know it doesn't work great on everything, but it works well for most of what I shoot. Definitely give it a go.

Depending on what they use for "Metallic". The lab I use calls their "metallic" a "pearl" paper and is in fact Fuji Pearl paper. Some places will actually print onto metal slabs.
If it's the pearl type stuff, I've found that back and white as well as certain colours (yellow, orange, red, green, purple, royal blue) tend to pop more.

I print a lot on Kodak Pro ENDURA Metallic. You can use it as a selling point. It makes the colors come "alive." Liquid on paper. It's not for all shots but it works best where there are many colors. I have this shot where the sky is just screaming with color, and when people see it they seem to question how did I get the colors so vibrant. You just havet to make sure you sell it so your client knows why he is paying more for it. I print at Nations Photo Lab or sometimes at AdoramaPix.
"Professionals who seek distinction for commercial and portrait output as a means to expand business have a new dimension to offer their clients. The glossy finish and metallic-looking appearance of this paper create images with exceptional visual interest and depth, which are sure to appeal to both photographers and display designers. Photographers have described the look as “chrome on paper.” ENDURA Metallic VC Paper uses a proprietary combination of film laminate layers to produce three-dimensional, outstanding, lasting images on an ultra-bright background. Its professional emulsion set provides extreme sharpness, brightness, and color saturation with an intense black density that increases visual appeal. Try it for a wide range of applications – from portraits (sports, special events, youth and wedding) to commercial uses, such as print runs, press kits, photo décor, pop-up and display images." Landscapes look amazing printed on metal. They just have a certain sharp look to them that makes them sell really well
