Default Anyone familiar with Digital Photo Professional?

So I've trying to try out shooting in RAW for awhile now. I lost the last ones I shot when my computer went down while trying to download some plug-in's so that my .CR2 files would be viewable in my PSE 7.

I had decided to wait to mess with it until I could upgrade my PS (too nervous to try the plug-in's again on my new computer!), but I couldn't help myself. So I started messing around, and I can open them in Digital Photo Professional that came with my camera (Canon 50D) and edit the brightness/contrast, sharpness, white balance, picture style, etc. in there.

I can convert them to jpg so they can be opened into PSE. Only problem is I can't find anything in there for noise. So that would mean if I shot something at a higher ISO and had some noise then I’d have to do them all in that other program and then open them 1 at a time in PSE too to adjust noise. I'm already spending too much time editing, can't imagine opening a lot of them twice!

Just wanted to see if anyone else had dealt with this problem, thanks!
Sarah

first off, if you plan on doing more work on them in PSE, DONT save them as jpegs. Reason being jpegs are a lossy format. Any editing you do to a jpeg (and save those edits) will degrade the file a little bit each time you do it. Also jpegs dont accepts layers when being saved, they automatically get flattened by the program. Save them as tiffs, do your work on them, then save them as jpegs when you are satisified with your edits. PSE does have a noise reduction function under Filters from the pulldown menu.

Thank you ~ Sorry, I didn't mean the noise reducer in PSE, I've used that since I got it. I meant in this Digital Photo Prof. because it's the only thing I can get to open up my RAW's right now. That's where I can do all the adjusting, I don't know. I guess I'm going to have to break down and try with the plug-in again. If I somehow manage to mess up this computer though, I'm going to have a nervous breakdown. But I don't want to mess with editing them in 2 programs, plus any actions or anything I'd have to do in PSE anyway.

actually DPP does have NR, when you open the raw file look at the dialog box that pops up on the right. Look at the tabs at top Raw | RGB | NR/Lens/ALO...click on the last, you can do NR for Luminance & Chrominance there.

Thank you! Maybe this will get me thru til I figure out which version of PSE will support .CR2 files....Or break down and try to do the stupid plug-in again.

It says on that page that 6.3 doesn't work with anything below PSE9. Trying to find which works with PSE7 and cr2 files.

Hi Sarah - I've just started shooting RAW and using DPP (cooler s/w is not in my budget at the present!). On Canon's digital learning center site there's a whole lot of tuitorials about DPP - I've just started watching them. Maybe they'd be of help to you?

Thank you! I actually got the plug-in to work in Elements. I am so excited. Really didn't want to have to go thru them in DPP and then open them again in PSE if I wanted to do an action, etc. I can't wait to play with my daughter's hilarious pictures in the tub I took today!
