Default Pulling blacks

So here is a question I need some help on. I have a picture I am working on modifying heavily. What I am trying to do is take the cracks in this image and change them from black to something else, ideally a reddish glow but right now I'm just trying to figure out how to replace just that part of the image with.. well anything really.

Magic wand does not work as their is to much variation in the shadows.

Attachment is the image, but in jpg format as the psd was too big.

Thanks!

the attachment did not work but here is a link to a picture with the similar set up. I can apply it to my image if you can figure out how to do it with this one.

Select by colour (from the Select menu).

yup what Os suggests... it that is giving you trouble you can go to your channels pallet and select the color channel that gives the best contrast and copy it and then select from there...third you could use your threshold adjustment to make the image go to high contrast B&W then select from there, go back to the color layer and apply the selection... lots of ways to skin that cat...
