Default Creating a vignette by a newbie?

OK...this probably sounds VERY elementary to some of you but I've NEVER used photoshop and have NO idea what I'm doing so with that said....
How do I make a nice simple Vignette for some of my photos. I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Really old I know but that's all I have to work with right now. I found "lighting effects" and that's almost what I'm looking for but no matter how I tweak it...the Vignette is a little too dark and not quite where I want it. It also puts a bit of a glow on the face that I don't like. I just want to take the image without adding anything to it and put a vignette on it.

I would create a new layer and put use the lasso tool to make a selection where you want the edge of the vignette. Invert the selection, and use the bucket fill tool with black. Remove the selection and use Guassian blur at about 250 pixels or more. Adjust opacity to taste, or change layer mode to overlay and adjust opacity. This will make it more subtle.
Hope this helps!

OH boy. I'm going to need a class or something. It sounds like you are speaking Russian to me!! LOL. I was hoping you'd just say..."go to the select border tool and pick what size you want"....or something to that effect.
I guess this is going to take me a while. I may be able tio figure it one going one by one and experimenting with all those tools.
I'm a little behind the times.

Ha. Sorry, I suck at explaining things. It really is very simple. Just sounds hard.
Hang on, try this. Screen shots are easier to understand than my ramblings.

I think lightroom might be more up your alley than photoshop. It is a bit more "out of the box" friendly that PS is.

Unfortunately i don't have lightbox, I only have photoshop 7.0 which is old but I'm guessing better then NO photoshop. So I've got to do with what I have.

THANKS...this is awesome! You explained fine but it's like speaking a different language. No matter how eloquent you may be....if i don't speak your language I won't understand you. LOL But this is a case where a picture is worth 1000 words.
