Default Stupid Lightroom Question

Ok, I'm tying to edit the exposure in LR...

So, I adjust the exposure and try to export it into another folder, but when I open the file that I exported, it's the same picture...

What am I doing wrong?

What are the steps you are doing to export it? Are you sure you are exporting it to a different folder and not opening the original file?

...importing the photo from my sd card, making the adjustments that I want made, Then ctrl+shift+E, saving the file to another folder as the same file format with a unique name.

Then go into that folder and open that file, and the unedited file opens..

You are not using the export function. Here is a tutorial on the many ways that you can export from LR: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 * Exporting photos

CTRL+SHIFT+E is the export function, but I wonder what you mean by " . . . as the same file format." Are you selecting "original?" Have you tried other formats?

If you select "original" it is saving the original Raw file and the changes are saved in a "sidecar" (xmp) file. You need a program that will read the xmp when it opens the raw file.

Why would you do that? If you want to have multiple versions, you can use the "create virtual copy" function instead.

What are you opening it with the second time (after export)?

If you have a screen shot of your export settings, it may help.

You need to open the nef with a program that will read the xmp file with it (i.e. photoshop). The xmp lightroom uses for itself are stored in the lightroom catalog. To get a "copy" xmp file with the exported NEF you need to change your file management preferences. Check the box that says "automatically write xmp file". If you don't do this, when you open the exported NEF there will be no changes displayed (as there is no xmp file "associated").

But I don't know why you would do this unless you wanted to send the raw+changes to someone else to work with.

I am changing the exposures and saving each file, then creating a HDR in photoshop with the NEFs

I just figured this out, it worked once. Am I missing an easier way of creating HDR?
