Default Lightroom users: How do you catalogue?

Lightroom users: How do you catalogue?

I have tens of thousands of photos—don’t we all.

The Lightroom data base seems to slow down around 10K pix or so. Therefore, I was thinking of making a number of catalogues, say one for each year.

Anyone?

Thanks for your help.

I don't shoot all that much so catalog per year is fine for me. And I don't keep all photos I take.. I just delete all the ones that aren't good enough to keep.

But if the year is too long and db gets too big then maybe do half or quarters. For many peeps shooting for a living it seems that the best thing is to have catalog for each client/project.

I've got 30,000 or so in my catalog with no problem. What version are you running and on what type of computer? Maybe your problem is a slow hard drive, especially if it is a USB external drive.

I've got a maxed-out MacBook Pro, that I keep very clean and optimized and LR 2, about to upgrade to 3 with well over 50,000 pix in the catalogue. I also use very fast 1.2 TB external drive via FireWire. So, that's not the issue.

It's really not that slow.I don't see the spinning beach ball much.

However, I can see that I should probably go to yearly catalogues—unless someone has a better idea.
