Default Question for the GIMP users out there.

I downloaded and installed GIMP but have not yet taken the time to check it out. Does it have its own RAW processor or will I still need to process RAW in Lightroom before I move into GIMP?

GIMP doesn't read RAW files, for that you need to install a RAW converter, like UFRaw.

Many versions of Gimp come with UFRaw pre-installed. Try to open one with Gimp before installing it again!

I've never had UFRaw install with GIMP ... not even from their web site. But it's a VERY useful pair of tools, and very much worth the extra download to have them both.

The version I downloaded and installed, had a version of UFRaw included.

Didnt take any extra effort on my part....

I think that versions installed through package managers are the ones most likely to have UFRaw. Downloading directly is more likely to get you "vanilla" Gimp.

UFRAW as others have said. However, it's quite limiting in its lack of features etc. Additionally, many people edit raw because the source is 16 bit (even if there's only 14 bits of actual data). UFRAW can deal with this, gimp cannot; It will drop it down to 8 bit. Just something to keep in mind.

RAWTherapee is another option, but a little different interface. Where UFRaw functions more as an additional piece to GIMP, RAWTherapee is more of a standalone application, and it includes a little bit of asset management. I used UFRaw for a while but have switched to RAWTherapee because I find I can more easily do all my editing there for 95% of my images for web. I only use GIMP now when I need layers or for touching up images for prints.
