If you post a SOOC it'd be easier to show you a conversion along with the steps involved.

Nicola, if you will note, the famous B & W photographers of the past, e. g. Ansel Adams, did not actually produce B & W photos. They are duotones.

Post the original and we can explain.

What software are you using?

this is how I do B&W conversion in elements.
Create a new adjustment layer, select gradient. Chose the B&W option.
Create another adjustment layer-select levels. At this point, I cannot tell you exactly what to do, it will depend on the photo. It will give you a histogram of sorts and you need to adjust the black, white and midtones.
Then I create one last adjustment layer-select brightness and contrast. Again, I just play around with the sliders until I get what I like.

Using this method, I never get "gray" it is always true black and white. Hope that helps.

Cant help with the b&w conversion but wanted to tell you that it is a beautiful picture. I'm just learning about portrait photography. Nice job. Good luck with your conversion!

Nicola, I would like to do several different B & W conversions for you. However, you need to permit downloading of the photo. I can do it with the lesser version, but it won't be as good.
