Default Autopainting, plug-ins and filters

What is the difference between these pieces of software? I am looking for autopaint software that I can manipulate a bit to have some control over. My skills are not that of a painter but an average amateur photographer yet I want to have a bit of control over the final look. Which of these do you think would allow me this control yet still do most of the work for me? As you can tell I am a novice at this aspect of photography and need some help before I make my selection. I have already bought PE4 because I got it for $12 so even if it isn't what I want there is no big loss. Your suggestions, advice and explanations are gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

A new addition to photo imaging software, and one you may want to consider, is web-based programs. All of these programs are initially free though most will charge you once your memory requirements exceed a certain threshold. Photoshop has their own version called "Photoshop Express" though it has very limited features, more closely resembling Picasa. Better choices include Picnik, Splashup and Phoenix. Picnik is nice because it is integrated with flickr; Splashup and Phoenix have many of PS's more useful tools, like layers and compositing.

I have a more detailed explanation on my blog.

Hi Tim,
You do a whole lot in PSE to create more painterly effects and a whole lot more. There is a learning curve, and there are a lot of tutorials out there that can take you step-by-step through the different effects. Remember to work in layers...that is the best advice I can give on PS.
