My son and I had this conversation just yesterday evening. I upload straight to Elements and use the Organizer to keep things straight. I post process using PSE and save as jpeg's when I am ready to print.

He, on the other hand, uploads using LR. He tags, sorts, and does the bulk of his post production there, only going to Elements to finalize any minor tweaks prior to printing. He also likes the non-destructive editing in LR. He knows that no matter what he does to a RAW file, he can always go back to the original with LR. I keep a back-up on an external HD, and NEVER edit the back-ups.

He claims it is easier for him to organize in LR, I prefer not having the extra step. He does a lot of batch operations, and LR is great at doing things like batch renaming of files. I prefer working with one or two shots at a time, so batching is not a big issue for me.

Bottom line is it's up to you and how you work. There! A long-winded reply that fails to help you answer your question. Can you tell I'm a teacher?

I used PSE up to version 6, then discovered LR.

I prefer LR of the two.

Hard to explain but mostly LR, for me, is much more comfortable to work in and easier to use.

I agree with jsherp - it's a personal choice. Which suits your work style better. Which has the tools you require. Both are good programs, and if you're trying to decide which to purchase I recommend downloading the trial versions of each and taking them out for a test drive.

Lightroom

I'm a Canon shooter and used to rely on DPP (came with the camera) for all my RAW processing. After playing with LR for a while, I'm relying on that more and more. I don't use the cataloging features or tagging or anything like that. I just like having more control over how I process RAW especially with the adjustment brushes. I don't have to take it into PSP or PS to lighten up just a little area of the face. I can do it in LR. Of course all my pictures get sent to PSP or PS eventually for other minor things if needed but I'd pick LR over PSE for RAW processing.

If you want pixel level editing capabilities, Elements. If you want image management functionality with the ability to do some editing (not pixel level), Lightroom.
