Default Lightroom Export questions

I have been using lightroom lately and I am starting to really like it. However, I have a question about exporting.

The default for resolution is 72 ppi, is this the standard for print images? Or should I change it or leave it alone? I haven't yet printed anything that has been exported I actually just noticed it so I'm wondering if it is ok where it is?

I'm not an expert, so I'm happy to be corrected by others if my answer here is incorrect, but I believe that 72ppi is fine for displaying on a screen (i.e. if you're exporting a photo to upload to flickr, for example), but if you want to print the picture then you'll have to choose an appropriate ppi depending on the size of the print, and the capabilities of your printer. I've heard values in the range 200-300dpi mentioned for decent sixed (8*10) prints.

Why not just print from Lightroom? Why do double work?

dpi/ppi is pretty irrelevant when it comes to on-screen viewing. absolute pixel sizes are really all that matter.

for printing, you want the maximum density you can get without upsampling. in a perfect world, everyone would print 300 dpi or higher, but most cameras don't have the resolution to print large and dense.

So I should have it at 300 ppi at least I just want to be able to export to a high resolution DVD and have it as a backup form for the photos. Thanks!

Hi Lynette,
I don't know if you're on Facebook or not but if you are, become a fan of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. They post very informative tutorials everyday. In fact coincidentally today, there's a tutorial on exporting. Lightroom link

72ppi for online images. This creates a crappy printed version for thieves but looks good on the screen.
300ppi for your printing
600ppi for very large prints and commercial work.
