Question Crop Ratio

What is the best crop ratio to use for cropping when you have no specific plans for printing the image?

It depends what else you are planning to do with the image. If you have not particular plans at all, then perhaps it is best just to keep the image unmodified as it came from the camera. You might also be guided by the content of the picture; a crop can do wonders for the composition if your initial framing was a bit wide.

I would recommend thinking about the photo itself: would it look better with a square crop? In a different orientation? Long and narrow? ... and so on. But if you're not sure, then just leave it as it is. That way, you have everything that you could hope for in the future if you decide to re-process or re-crop it.

There isn't one: crop for the size you're printing. If you're providing a CD to clients, then you can either A) crop to all the ratios (there are only a few) or B) charge extra for more ratios.
