I think most of the people who are using the RAW/Gimp combination are using UFRAW to handle their RAW processing. Like GIMP it is freeware built under the GNU agreement and is a pretty hardy tool. It will handle the ORF files along with most other camera manufacturers proprietary formats. I can't promise you your EXIF data will make the cut when it is changed to JPEG but if you read the website they will show you the workaround for this. There may be other tools out these that serve as well; personally I don't like either Gimp or UFRAW as much as the Adobe products but, to be fair, I haven't spent nearly as much time mastering them either.
