Default Saving files in RAW

I'm new to RAW - it's a fantastic thing - having great fun with the adjustment brush. However, I cropped and adjusted a RAW file and hit save and made a DNG file ... all well and good. Opened the RAW file in Photoshop and made a jpg. Still good. Went into bridge and all three files, RAW, DNG, JPG look exactly the same! What happened to my original RAW file -- I thought RAW never destructs the original file????

BTW, working in CS4.

Is there a .xmp file with the raw image? That's there the changes are saved. If you get rid of that sidecar file the changes should disappear also.

I don't see an xmp file -- I had heard about that -- the fileI see has the original name and CR2 extension -- what do you mean WITH the raw file? With where?

In the same folder where the raw file is saved. The original raw file name or extension aren't changed. So there should be a .cr2 and .xmp file in the same folder. Might be good idea to check that it's not hidden by the system. If you have Windows go to the Folder options and View tab, there should be option for "Show hidden files and folders" as a radio button.

I'm looking at the pictures in Bridge - the only folder is the one created when I uploaded all my pictures from the card. And I only see the jpg, dng and cr2 in amongst all my other pictures. I'll have to search when I get home ...

I don't know anything about the stuff vsa is talking about. But if you work on a file in RAW and want to work on it in photoshop but still save the original RAW, then hold down alt and click open copy. That will open a copy of the worked on file in photoshop while still saving the original untouched RAW file. That's how I do it anyway.

bridge do not show the .xmp files. You have to go to your computer and open up the folder and then you'll see all the .xmp file beloning to the raw files you have edited. Now, if you delete the .xmp files then all your editing have gone to waste.

You can also go back to the original image "as shot" in the RAW editor. In ACR just below the different tabs and all the way to the right, you will see a drop down box. Click on that and hit "Reset Camera Defaults" and it will take you back to the original image settings. Those setting have not changed, only the way that information has been interpretted.

Doesn't the dng file actually have the xmp embedded in it?
