Default Photoshop - how do you get this effect?

The high contrast black and white but still maintaining detail. I suspect there is a lot of burning involved and many of my photos may be too washed out. I know how to do a high contrast b&w, but it isn't the same effect as this.

I am a friend of the photographer who posted that picture (and about half the kids there, Leo is the boy with his tounge out) however he is visiting various NGO locations around Asia right now so I can't ask him.

I have been visiting relatives (thus the picture of my friend I posted before) and volunteering around about so I've wound up with lots of pictures of kids playing and no idea of how to improve them.
