GIMP (windows xp) and RAW

I continue to struggle with whether to convert my netbook to mac so that I understand it and already have the software to deal with photographs. I'm going to try the trial of PSE 8 for windows (it's what I use on my mac) since I'm familiar with it but am also curious about GIMP. Can those who use it on windows tell me what they use for a RAW converter and is it anything like Bridge? (I've read a LITTLE about UFR vs. RawTherapee.)

Not convinced that I want to learn a whole new program so would appreciate knowing if there's any huge advantage from one to the other (meaning PSE8 vs. GIMP), understanding that there is probably a pretty huge rivalry of supporters of each

I believe that compared to PSE8 Gimp gives you full use of Curves and advanced adjustments that Elements doesnt offer with out plugins. How ever Elements offers native RAW support. The other advantage of Gimp is price... how ever if that doesnt bother you and your an apple products person stick with PSE8 as Gimp is a very different beast.
