Default Lightroom x Photoshop

Hello everyone. I've just begun going serious about photography and upgraded from my P&S to a DSRL and I've been studying a lot and reading a lot of things here at DPS and there is one thing about post production that I have not understood yet and would like some help. It might be a very obvious question to most of you but please have some patience with the newbie here So here goes my question.
What is the difference, or actual purpose, of Lightroom and Photoshop? Photoshop's reputation is well known to everyone but I had never heard of lightroom and have looked at Adobe's site but I haven't come to a conclusion yet of which to use, if not both. Please help.

Thank you very much.

Photoshop is for retouching, editing, manipulating, etc. photos. It does a TON more than that but, for this conversation, we'll leave it at that. Lightroom is just for photo editing. Specifically, editing in RAW. It will control exposure, tone, temp, etc. and that's about it. Let's say you wanted to add a friend into a photo that wasn't there before. You couldn't do that in Lightroom, you'd have to use Photoshop. Following me?

Yep Photoshop can do more complicated stuff like the forementioned adding people to the photo. It can do everything Lightroom can really, but with a bit different workflow. Lightroom can't do everything Photoshop can.

Lightroom is more geared towards non destructive editing. And file management in Lightroom is much easier than in Photoshop. Granted that you can use Bridge (which comes with Photoshop and other Adobe products) but I like Lightroom's workflow better. And Lightroom was purely created with photographers in mind.

If you only need to change colors and adjust contrast a little and sharpen and maybe remove a little spot from the photo then Lightroom is your guy. If you need to remove huge chunks from buildings and create a post apocalyptic scenario then you want Photoshop.

Just download the free trials if you haven't already and test both to see what you need and like. I use both.

Suggest you go to Adobe's site and check out, they explain the differences. Lightroom is a digital asset management program that does most of the edits that the majority of photographers will need to do. You only need photoshop for bit level editing.
